Call and Ask your MP – I

This is day one of the “Call And Ask your MP” campaign. Got positive response thus far, called 15 MP’s in the alphabetic order. Found only 2 MP’s from congress and obviously both had views in line with the party, but the rest of them were very much in support of a strong lokpal bill.

Since the bill presented by the government is a slim down version of the Lokpal bill with some noted major differences such as

  • whistle blower protection act
  • Lokayukta’s at the state level
  • Members of Parliament to be included under the purview of the anti corruption laws
  • I started calling the MP’s to see who in the parliament is opposed and who is in favor. Since i only have a couple of minutes talk time, i picked only the above provisions in the bill. Once this exercise is finished, there will be another round of campaigning to reason/debate/discuss with the set of MP’s who are against any of the above. If you are interested in “Call Your MP” campaign, then here is the list of phone numbers for all the MP’s.. If you can keep me posted, then we can coordinate our activities.

    A typical conversation
Me: May i speak with the MP please (depending on the region the MP belonged to, i switched between Hindi and English)
once the MP is on the line
    MP: Yes, who is this
Me: Good morning Mr MP, I’m Suresh from NJ, USA. Can i talk to you for a couple of minutes, if that’s ok with you.
    MP: Yes
Me: Thank You. Calling you to know your opinion on couple of provisions mentioned in the JanLokpal Bill.
and then ask each one of the above points. Each call lasted no more than 2 minutes, but yeah, I had to try multiple numbers though. Good thing, almost all the numbers tried thus far are accurately listed.
