SaveRTI2.0 – Day III

After a series of No response & Number switched off – I stumbled upon Vijay Bahadur Singh, BSP MP. Just like his name Bahadur, he was brave enough to say that he opposed RTI Amendments, despite his party’s stance. Need more Bahadur’s like him.

Here is a quick summary of my 17 minute conversation

  • Practice law more than 37 years in corporate sector
  • Any law which goes towards transparency should be welcomed
  • Any view which stops transparency should be discouraged
  • Anyone in the public life, nothing is private. If the MP wants a private level, then MP can became a teacher
  • Party not being transparent is not justified
  • He does worry about RTI being misused and used for personal attacks etc, so the act must ensure sufficient protection
  • Any legislation should go via the standing committee – he believes standing committee is like a pre test. Gave an analogy of a patient going to the doctor. The doctor won’t immediately operate on the patient, a series of tests are conducted and based on that the doctor decides whether to operate or not
  • Moreover Parliamentarians are flooded with so many legislative business, so standing committee is better equipped with reviewing such important legislations.
  • Very informed & strongly believes that transparency and accountability is a matter of time and the party will definitely come under RTI.
  • It’s not nuclear intelligence or matter of security concern, what’s there to hide
