Bhopal Gas Disaster went missing

The Bhopal Gas Disaster went missing. It went missing from the textbooks (may have been reduced to a chapter), the India-US bilateral talks, the election manifestos, the political party agendas, the media outrage .

  • Age: 34 years
  • Current status: Abandoned by its parents; India & the US government
  • Nick Name: The worst industrial disaster
  • Last seen: As a dense cloud in Bhopal in 1984
  • Legal Guardian: Dow Chemicals
  • Identification marks: Children born with birth defects; people with breathing diseases

It wasn’t like India and US ties were severed after the disaster. In fact, they only bloomed and blossomed, but in all these years, Bhopal Gas Disaster was never featured in any of the bi-lateral talks or other engagements

  • 1991: Indian opens its door to globalization that help expand economic ties with the United States.
  • 1998: The Indian government completes nuclear tests and President Bill Clinton imposes economic sanctions, required under U.S. law
  • 2000: President Bill Clinton makes the first U.S. presidential trip to India since 1978.
  • 2001: All sanctions on India were lifted
  • 2005:
    • Energy security dialogue between the two nations
    • Defense Framework & Nuclear deals were signed
  • 2006: President Bush visits India
  • 2009: Manmohan Singh visits US
  • 2010:
    • US and India hold the first strategic dialogue
    • Obama backs India for a permanent UN security council seat
  • 2013: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visits US
  • 2014: Prime Minister Modi visits US
  • 2015: Obama visits India
  • 2016: Prime Minister Modi visits US

And no this is not just the Indian Central Govt missing in action, its the same with the political parties in power in the Madhya Pradesh government since the disaster. They became the 3 monkeys

  • closed their mouth & never spoke a word in support of the victims
  • closed their ears & never heard the pleas of the victims
  • closed their eyes & never acknowledge the contamination around the disaster

  • 1984-1990: INC
  • 1990-1992: BJP
  • 1992-1993: President Rule
  • 1993-1998: INC
  • 2003-2016 BJP
